Spiceworks
Written by: Michael Robucci
I recently came across a handy tool for the network admin called Spiceworks. It can be found on their main page, Spiceworks.com. This handy tool is completely free, with a not-so-annoying ad section on the upper right. It is a web based tool that installs an instance of SQL Server Express to store data. Providing a domain admin account, this tool will scan the entire network for network devices (switches, printers, access points, etc.) and computers as well as keep an inventory of what software is installed on those computers. It can be set to run on a schedule constantly updating computer information. The interface is all web driven and fairly intuitive.

I found this tool a year or two ago and havn’t put it down since, its the bomb for IT managment, i dont know what i would do without it now.
Spiceworks 4.0 (currentely in alpha) will beat 3.6 hands down, and even include a network map
